In September, we were so fortunate to have Laura Dewey with us as she shared her three-step process for well being through self leadership.
What’s self leadership, you might be wondering? As Laura shared during the workshop, self leadership is “knowing what you want to achieve and then taking the necessary steps to get there, even when faced with challenges.” It’s taking responsibility for your thoughts, actions, beliefs, and words, and having the awareness to see how those things could be contributing to any feelings of suffering. Then, using that awareness to make a different choice for a different outcome. We’re not the victim of our circumstances; we have power!
Throughout the evening, Laura led the group through exercises in each step of her self leadership formula. She provided workbook pages that participants filled out individually and then shared with the group (if they felt comfortable doing so).
One of the big takeaways from the workshop was that we all have choices, whether we see them or not, even when it feels like we don’t have a choice. In any given situation, we have outer choices (outside of ourselves), like asking for help, taking a break, or exercising; and inner choices (within ourselves), like pausing when triggered, reframing what’s happened, or accepting what is.
It’s not always easy to make big, sweeping changes to a way of being, so, as Laura put it, we should experiment. Try something one time and see how it goes! Experimenting one time is a bite-sized way to start making bigger changes. Afterall, the journey of a thousand miles starts with just one step.
It was a fabulous evening learning about ways to show up for ourselves, what gets in the way of showing up, and how to build new habits (hint: one step at a time). As with all of our events, the workshop ended with women sharing, connecting, and supporting each other.
We hope to see you next time!
